Rain Rain GOOOOO Away….

I’m reminded of the days when I was a boy scout singing
Rain rain go away,
Come again another day,
Boy scouts want to play,
Rain rain go away.
The much awaited rain has lashed and made the horizon sink. Is it a welcome relief or a spoil sport for the water starved chennaites? It is dark as a tunnel everywhere with power suspended and all sorts of entertainment out of bounds, I was unable to kill the idleness, with the day’s newspaper partially done and none of the unread novels in hand, I tried to start on ‘Pride and prejudice’ by Jane Austen but the smugness inside me never allowed me to turn the pages. I’m screwed up inside this dark villa.

With no other go, I decided to set my foot on the erstwhile jam-packed roads of the mambalam-T.nagar stretch but none of them were in sight, only meager isles in the form of platforms and manholes peeped out of the vast stretched water pools. First time in my life I have seen such gorgeous sights through naked eyes to such a great extent looking exactly like the ostentatious movie sets (Anbe sivam…) with a lorry struck up on the center of the road and the entire course deserted with only a few jay walkers.

I walked around (just a bit of swimming…) for an hour or so (my expectations of seeing a Shreya look-alike girl dancing in mazhai turned futile) and with all shops and mainly hotels with their shutters down, I was in no man’s land. The only shop which was open was a paint shop (still I can’t guess who buys distempers and paints in such a gruesome time!!!).Then I recharged my yet to become charge less cell phone so that I could kill some time but mobiles sans signals and sans charge is a ghastly encounter. The next best thing I could do is to take a good nap and with the cool breeze still under the sheets it gave me a good company.

When I woke up it was still murky such that I could not see my hands as the dusk has set and I went out and had a jolly good chat with my apartment chums for about two three hours and darkness reigned everywhere announcing the fall of night. The nauseating highpoint was that power was resumed at the end of my lane during hours of darkness and this made us green-eyed!!!

Then the lull day was about to end and with almost 42 cm of rainfall it seemed we were in a place like Cherapunji .I went on to sleep hoping that a gush of water would wake me up the next day and expecting water under my computer table…. But the scenario was completely different.

Everyone felt flabbergasted the next day with the sun scorching under the seats!!! Then I was reminded that I woke up in Chennai and not in Chicago!!! Eventually this day left in me a memorable mark of a BLACK THURSDAY.
