Memoirs from the MaDAM
ramanujam June 23rd, 2006
Two days back I happened to visit my school which is one of the most unique schools in the city, I would even say in the world. I hope many would have heard about a school named Sri Ahobila Math Oriental Hr Sec School in West Mambalam. This is where I did my final two years of schooling. Nearly two tears since I left the school I went there two days back to get a Sanskrit merit scholarship cheque (don’t ask me if I know Sanskrit well…I studied Sanskrit for nearly 8 years I suppose!!!!!). I can also read Tamil (I had it as my second language till 5th standard), thanks to Ananda Vikatan for keeping me fluent till now.
What is so different about the school? First and foremost is it’s ambience, it doesn’t look like a school. All male students are required to wear a vezhti (dhoti…of course with shorts inside!!!!) and all female students should wear dhavani (half sari). The school produces myriad state ranks every year and also admission to the higher secondary stream has got a lot of formalities. All students (mostly from the Brahmin community…) in the first year are made to study Vedas and Upanishads and also Sanskrit is the compulsory second language of instruction.
When I went there to collect the cheque along with one friend who suggested buying a DVD writer with the money, I also resorted to the same plan but later dropped it. Let me have those 1500 bucks for some other purpose!!! I had the same feeling as when I entered the school for the first day. Nothing has changed since- the small boys chanting the Vedas, the HM, and the AHM sir (one of my most fauvorite teachers…), The teachers, the chemistry lab salt analysis…. (Few things which I could notice in the short time I stayed)
In the two years I studied there I learnt a lot and I would even say wasted the opportunity. The school had some of the best staff members. During the twelfth standard our class was an “only boys” class and we enjoyed to the core and some of the moments still stay fresh in the mind. The school strength was massive and I made some good friends during the two years.
Coming back to the current story, a remainder for the Bloggers meet, it is supposed to take place tomorrow (24th June, 3:00 PM) at Ascendas near Tidel Park in Taramani.
We are greatly indebted to Kiruba, Gilli, Prav, magix and all others for putting up the info in their blogs.
