2 Mbps-Bull shit!

Although i am very late to blog on this topic i guess this makes a little sense. 2007 is supposed to be the year of broadband and wish the broadband sector lives up to the expectations. When Dayanidhi Maran announced about the 2Mbps shift without increase in charges people seldom believed and at last it somehow became a reality. The increase in the bandwidth doesn’t make a big difference. With limited downloading there is no value addition.

Under the Home 500 plan download is free from 2 AM to 8 AM and Mahesh said me that the average download speed during that time is 100 kbps which is far better than the other providers. But check this out, there are innumerable people bitching about it. I use Airtel but anyday i would not prefer shifting to Bsnl as it lacks customer service. Airtel has got to wake up and increase the speeds.

To sum up all this is crap, few weeks back i was reading the PC world (UK edition) in the British Council. I was not able to control laughing at our situation after reading an article. People were complaining that a certain company promised download speeds of up to 8 Mbps and people were getting only 4 or 5 Mbps. What the fuck! I am speaking of download in terms of kb in a country called India where 128 kbps is called broadband. We have got a long way to go.Unless Bsnl/airtel increases the speed for the unlimited plans the upgrade is bull shit.

Overall computers have developed massively in the past decade. For instance check this out,in the episode “One with the List”(Nov 1995) from the sitcom Friends where Chandler gets a new laptop….He sounds like he got the best configuration for his system
Chandler: Alright! Check out this bad boy…
12 Megabytes(MB) of RAM
500 Megabyte Hard drive
Built in spread sheet capabilities and a modem that transmits over 28000 bps!
Phoebe: Ah!ha…What you gonna use it for?
Chandler: Games and stuff!

Compare it with the current scenario, guess we will make good progress in the Broadband area also few years down the line.

Siddharth in his latest post has unearthed this wonderful site for watching movies online. It has got a hell lot of movies, TV shows ,comedies , cartoons and stuff. The video size and the quality are also pretty decent. I watched a FRIENDS episode and the print and sound were also ok. Buffering would have been better if i had a 2 Mbps connection!!!

we are certainly lagggggggggggggging far beyond.

    imagine people using 64kbps. wtf?

20 mbps will be toooo much for home usage….
anything better than the current is fine:)
    64kbps! WTF again;)

hmmm..germany is said to be the “land of the broadband”..eventhough high speeds are costlier there they are excellent(rapidshare was born in germany).think it would take about 5 years for us to reach the 5mbit level or so..anyway lets hope airtel raises speeds..anyway gud job..good debating post!!

500 mb hard drive ? I guess its a typo :) doesnt sound a lot to me :)

    Nice article …

  5. Ramanujam says:

    @sid
Its also true that the costs are way too high and its good that we get cheap broadband(cheap both ways!)
    Ya…same hopes! Wake up Airtel!
    Thanks:)

    @parminder
No its not a typo and 500 MB was good space during those days and that too for a laptop it was very good considering only the text and dos programs!

If u dont beleive check this:

All I can say is my 4×72gb 10000rpm hard drives and 4×2gb ram is shying away and hiding the quad xeon which needs 2 refrigration units to keep it cool when I push this box to do some work :)

I got my first pc in 2001 so got no idea what it was like before that :)

I always thought computers were invented by someone called pentium3 and his friend 64mb ram and thier team which included the slow coach called win98 and thank god now I know it wasent them ha ha ha

    Here is something serious…

I am planning to bring the isp’s to a stand still by potesting against them by chocking thier networks by asking every one I can reach to turn thier pc’s on at a given time and start downloading at the max speed available to them…
The isp’s that will be included are bsnl, mtnl, airtel, reliance, sify and a few more and I till now have a reach of about 10000 visitors per day from India and rising and I plan this even to take place for a week every day atleast 4 times a day and the plans are for june 2007 day hasent been decided yet..

    Want to join in?

Yes it will bring them to thier knees, with speeds dipping down to the lowest levels ever and thier customer care lines jammed up they will be begging for mercy.. We have done our calculations and we have e-mail addresses of more then 80000 people who are eagerly waiting to do this :)

if i remember rite, i once read in digit that less than 256 kbps is officially not termed as broaadband … but considering the 52 kbps connection that bsnl provided a couple of years back, 128 is pretty decent but when bsnl provides 2 mbps, other isp have to wake up

and wats one going to do with a 12 mb ram and 500 mb hdd … makes no sense in today’s scenario …

Before cursing BSNL first let us see wether Airtel has even matched 2MBPS for Rs.500 ? I am one unhappy Airtel customer ( Unhappy because that have not increased speeds). I am willing 2 surrender Airtel in 2 months if they do not match BSNL’s speeds and download limits. What am I to do with a sweet voice on the end of a phone (so called customer service)? I want Speed and Download limit!

  11. heuristic coder says:

nice 1 da….. see how clever BSNL is.they hav stated upto 2mbps… not 2mbps always…. durin daytime i get aroun 1800 kbps and durin nite time around 800 kbps… just chk ur broadband speed here
